Funciones de un Energy Management System (EMS)

Energy Management System (EMS)

The Energy Management System (EMS) is the system responsible for defining a facility’s energy operation strategy. Its main objective is to optimise the operation of assets based on technical, economic and contractual criteria.

Unlike real-time control systems, the EMS makes decisions at a higher level, determining when and how each resource should operate.

Functions of an Energy Management System (EMS)

Our EMS enables the monitoring, planning and optimisation of a facility’s energy operations, integrating generation, consumption and storage.

Using advanced algorithms, the Energy Management System makes strategic decisions based on forecasts, market prices and operational conditions, improving the system’s overall efficiency and maximising its profitability.

  • Optimisation of energy use.
  • Reduction of costs and penalties.
  • Storage management.
  • Operational planning.
  • Adaptation to market prices.
  • Compliance with contractual restrictions.

EMS classification

The EMS is available in two versions, tailored to the scope of the project and the type of integration required:

Standalone EMS

Optimises plant operations by integrating real-time functionalities, such as:

  • Peak shaving.
  • Anti-export.
  • Energy dispatch optimisation.
  • Load and storage management.
Conventional EMS

Optimises plant operation in coordination with an RTC controller, particularly in projects with greater operational complexity:

  • Coordination with PPC.
  • Coordination with MGC.
  • Energy planning.
  • Economic and operational optimisation.

Formats

The EMS can be offered in different formats depending on the project’s requirements and the facility’s architecture:

  • Offered as SaaS.
  • Offered as part of the RTC product range.
  • Offered as a standalone unit.

Main function: energy optimisation

The EMS acts as the plant’s energy manager, determining how to operate the facility from an energy perspective to meet technical, economic and contractual objectives:

  • When to use the battery.
  • When to prioritise renewable generation.
  • When to start or stop generator sets.
  • How to manage loads to minimise costs or LCoE (levelled cost of energy).
