The Microgrid Controller (MGC) is the system responsible for coordinating generation, storage, the grid, diesel generators and loads to ensure the stability and efficiency of an electrical microgrid.
This solution enables the operation of both grid-connected and off-grid systems, optimising the use of energy resources and ensuring continuity of supply in any scenario.
What does a Microgrid Controller do?
An MGC acts as the brain of the microgrid, managing all energy assets in real time:
- Coordination of renewable generation (PV, wind)
- Management of energy storage systems (BESS)
- Control of diesel generator sets
- Monitoring of critical and flexible loads
- Frequency and voltage control
- Optimisation of consumption and generation
MGC: Product and use cases
This is a single product that is tailored and configured according to each project and the type of facility (islanded systems, microgrids, off-grid projects or facilities that alternate between grid-connected and island operation).
In these environments, the system manages the electrical stability of the islanded system:
- Voltage, frequency and synchronisation.
- Power allocation amongst resources.
- Prioritisation between resources and internal loads.
At the same time, it coordinates loads and resources:
- Renewable generation.
- Battery storage.
- Generator sets.
- Critical or manageable loads.
PPC integration and regulatory compliance
As an additional feature, the system can integrate PPC capacity when the project is connected to the grid and regulatory compliance is required at the point of connection (for example, NTS 2.1).
In such cases, the MGC facilitates:
- Grid-connected operation in accordance with the operator’s requirements.
- Coordinated on-grid/off-grid transitions.
- Coordination between the MGC and the PPC (and, where applicable, with the EMS) when optimisation and advanced management of the facility are required.
